Prostate Artery Embolisation
Private Health UHD are uniquely placed and are the only private hospital able to provide this treatment in the area.
What is a Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE)?
PAE is a non-surgical way of treating an enlarged Prostate by blocking off the Arteries that supply it, making it shrink. PAE is an alternative to a Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate, surgery that involves cutting away a section of the prostate.
Who will perform this procedure?
PAE’s are carried out by a specialised Doctor called an Interventional Radiologist in an Interventional Radiology X-Ray suite. Radiologists have expertise in interpreting X-ray and Ultrasound images which will be used to guide them during the procedure.
How long will it take?
Every patient is different and it can be very difficult to predict how straightforward or complex a PAE will be. Generally the procedure can take anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours.
What happens afterwards?
After the procedure you will be taken back to a ward where your observations will be monitored. Depending on how your artery is sealed you may need to lay flat for at least 2 hours to reduce the risk of bleeding. If your vital signs are okay and your pain under control you may be discharged later the same day; however, depending on your circumstances at home you may have to stay overnight.
