Fibroscan
From £436.00
A Fibroscan is a simple, safe, painless and brief examination of the liver that is similar to an ultrasound. Also known as transient elastography, the scan measures the stiffness of the liver to determine if there is any evidence of scarring or chronic damage to the liver. The scan also measures the degree of fatty liver (steatosis.) The scan works by creating high frequency sound waves to assess the liver. This will be felt as a gentle flick from the end of the probe when placed over the liver area (right upper abdomen.) Occasionally, the readings can be difficult to obtain and the scan might take a little longer.
There is no preparation required other than fasting for 2 hours before the scan (drinking water is fine.) Immediately after the scan, you will get the result and interpretation of it and a plan of action.
If you are worried about the health of your liver or test results suggest liver damage then a fibroscan, in some cases, may well be a helpful test. You can discuss this in more detail with your own GP or contact the team at PHUHD to book the scan and consultation on 0300 019 4992.
