Gynaecology

What is gynaecology?

Gynaecology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the health of the female reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. It covers a wide range of conditions and treatments, from routine health checks and diagnostics to complex surgical procedures.

Types of surgery/procedures

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) procedures are performed using small incisions and a camera to visualise the surgical area, reducing recovery time and minimising scarring.

Hysterectomy

  • Total Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus and cervix.
  • Subtotal (Partial) Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus while leaving the cervix intact.

These options depend on the patient’s condition and preferences. Both can often be done using minimally invasive techniques, which help improve recovery times.

Endometriosis Surgery

  • Excision Surgery: Precise removal of endometrial tissue from affected areas, reducing the likelihood of recurrence.
  • Ablation Surgery: Destruction of endometrial tissue through various techniques to relieve pain and symptoms.

The choice between excision and ablation depends on the extent and complexity of the disease.

Fibroid Treatment

  • Myomectomy: Surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus, often recommended for women seeking to maintain fertility.
  • Hysteroscopic Procedures: Minimally invasive treatment for fibroids inside the uterine cavity.

These approaches offer alternatives to hysterectomy for fibroid management.

Pelvic Floor Surgery

  • Prolapse Repair: Surgical correction for pelvic organ prolapse, which may involve lifting and repositioning the bladder, rectum, or uterus to restore pelvic anatomy and function.

Menstrual Disorders

  • Diagnostic Hysteroscopy: A minimally invasive procedure to inspect the inside of the uterus and identify abnormalities.
  • Treatments for Abnormal Bleeding: Can include targeted removal of polyps or other corrective procedures to address heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding.

Diagnostics and screening

  • Pelvic ultrasound scans
  • Hysteroscopy (to examine the inside of the uterus)
  • Laparoscopy (for diagnostic and surgical purposes)
  • Endometrial biopsy
