Dr Kamy Thavanesan is a highly experienced, triple‑accredited Consultant Physician specialising in Stroke Medicine, Acute Medicine, and General (Internal) Medicine. She has been practising as a Consultant at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital since 2015, providing expert care for patients with complex and acute medical conditions.

She graduated from the University of Southampton Medical School in 2005 and completed her specialist training in Acute and General Medicine in the Wessex region. During this time, she undertook an additional specialist Stroke Medicine Fellowship, deepening her expertise before completing her consultant training in 2015.

Dr Thavanesan is known for her clear, compassionate, and patient‑centred approach, taking time to understand each individual’s concerns and tailoring management plans to optimise long‑term health and wellbeing. She is highly proficient in the diagnosis and management of stroke and stroke‑related conditions, including stroke mimics and complex presentations.

Her key areas of expertise include:

• Stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
• Secondary stroke prevention
• Stroke in younger adults
• Post‑stroke complications, including seizures
• Cerebrovascular conditions and complex neurological presentations

She also provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for a wide range of acute and general medical conditions.

In addition to her extensive clinical experience, Dr Thavanesan is deeply committed to patient safety and quality of care. She currently holds the role of Associate Medical Director for Quality, Governance and Patient Safety at University Hospitals Dorset and is the NHS England–recognised Patient Safety Specialist for the Trust. These leadership roles reflect her dedication to delivering safe, evidence‑based, and consistently high‑quality care.

Dr Thavanesan is actively involved in clinical research and has been the lead for stroke research in Bournemouth for over 10 years, contributing to and recruiting patients into NIHR‑funded multicentre studies. This ensures her clinical practice remains informed by the most up‑to‑date evidence and innovations in stroke care.

She offers personalised private consultations focused on clear explanations, preventative strategies, and holistic optimisation of health, empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care.
